For the past few weeks I have been following this Chinese Drama, made for Youku and now streaming on Netflix. Almost gave up watching after the first few episodes as they were rather unexciting. But be a ThaiEng lang, i plodded on and by episode I was hook. Firtsly, I wanted to know how Captain Ran (played by Dylan Wang) met his maker and who did him in. I was also interested to know how the 18 year old Elevator Mystery aka 39th June 1997 mystery was finally solved.
By episode 19, it was quite obvious who was involved in Captain Ran's Death on CNY New Year Eve 2003
So there was this need to plod on to get confirmation
Here are the main characters' backgrounds ::
## He Yuanhang (played by Pan Yueming)
* Background: A seasoned, experienced, yet somewhat plain criminal detective.
* Role & Trajectory: In 1997, he is tasked with solving the mysterious elevator disappearance of a father and daughter at the Yuanlongli residential complex. Due to a lack of evidence and professional stagnation, the case stalls, causing his career to stall and his family life to fall into severe crisis. * Later Years: Over the next 18 years, he remains utterly obsessed with and guilt-ridden over the cold case. After sustaining a severe injury during an arrest attempt, he is forced into a desk-bound administrative role, spending his remaining years before retirement clashing with his rebellious daughter while trying to uncover the hidden truth. [1, 2, 5]## Ran Fangxu (played by Dylan Wang)
* Background: A sharp, idealistic, and passionate rookie detective who has just graduated from the police academy in 1997.
* Role & Trajectory: Assigned as He Yuanhang's apprentice, his strict reliance on modern theory and drive for efficiency initially clash with his partner's intuitive, experience-based approach. He initially concludes that the missing duo merely staged their disappearance to evade heavy debts. * Fate: Known for his sharp intuition but low physical combat skills ("戰五渣"), his relentless pursuit of justice eventually leads him into extreme danger. He is tragically killed in a rigged car crash on New Year's Eve in 2003 after getting too close to the genuine culprit.## He Xiaohe (played by Ren Min)
* Background: The daughter of He Yuanhang, who grows up in the shadow of her family's breakdown and her father's singular obsession.
* Role & Trajectory: Despite her early rebellious nature and friction with her father, she is deeply inspired by Ran Fangxu's legacy. She later joins the police force as a criminal investigator. * The Hand-off: By 2018, she picks up the mantle from her retired father. Upon discovering that Fangxu's fatal car crash was directly orchestrated by the perpetrators of the 1997 elevator mystery, she partners with her father to finally close the loop on the multi-decade investigation.## Qiao Suqing (played by Jiang Peiyao)
* Background: A key civilian figure intertwined with the community of the Yuanlongli residential complex.
* Role & Trajectory: While seemingly an ordinary bystander, she harbors dark ties to the missing individuals and local underground elements. She is later revealed to have played a complicit role alongside the missing daughter,徐萌 (Xu Meng)........*Spoilers have been removed, in case you want to watch the series.
